Course Corrections

When my family and I went on vacation last week I took my son and a friend deep sea fishing. The experience was not too great, I got seasick and the fishing wasn't that good. However, while we were fishing, I noticed something that I thought was interesting. As the captain was moving us from location to location trying to find some better fishing, the deckhands would throw a bouy out every time we stopped. The bouy had a small anchor on it to keep it fairly still. When it was time to move, the deckhands would retrieve the bouy and its anchor and throw it out at the next stop.

As I watched this, I kept wondering what in the world they were doing. Finally, it dawned on me what it was for. By the tme we reached a location where we could actually start fishing, we were 30 miles off-shore. There was no land in sight and the sea was very rough. The captain had no fixed reference point to go by to keep the boat still. The bouy provided a fixed object for the captain to use to keep the boat still.

So what does that have to do with anything? Well, the world we live in today is awash in relativism, what was obscene 40 years ago is now commonly accepted on a daily basis. Face it, when are in the open sea and need a fixed reference point to keep ourselves still.

I believe that Jesus Christ provides that reference point. He is that fixed point that we need to keep our eyes on to keep on the right path.
